Cigarette chemicals range from more than 4000 in numbers. These chemicals are obviouslly harming the smoker which most are aware of, but these chemicals are also harming those around you.
Passive smoking is where you breathe in another persons tabacco smoke. It affects both smokers and non - smokers. You can be passive smoking by just even walking past someone who is smoking, and not realise it. Passive smoking can cause many diseases, though it is more dangerous to children than adults.

Passive smoking causes the following diseases:

In Adults
  • Heart disease
  • Lung Cancer external image SMOCPO8.gif
  • Irritation of the eyes and nose
In Children
  • Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
  • Lower Birth Weight
  • Bronchitis, pneumonia and other lung/airways infections
  • Asthma, and worsening of asthma in children who already have the disease
  • Middle Ear disease
  • Respiratory symptons

Exposure to **Enviromental Tabacco Smoking** also causes futher health problems, such as:
In Adults
  • Nasal sinus cancer
  • Cervical cancer
  • Miscarriages
  • Stroke
  • Breast cancer

In children

It is estimated that prolonged exposure to seconhand tobacco smoke raises the risk of lung cancerby 20 - 25%, asthma by 40 - 60%, stroke by 80% and heart disease by 25 - 35%. If more parents knew about the potential damage that they are doing to their children by smoking, few would continue. The chances of your child ending up hospitalized doubles if you smoke around them, in your home. Even your pets will be relieved if you quit smoking, since passive smoking affects them as well.

Every day in the USA more than 3000 teenagers smoke their first cigarette. 70% of those teenagers will regret that day for the rest of their lives. A third of those 3000 will die due to smoking related diseases. 3000 non - smokers die from lung cancer every year. 400 000 people die anually due to smoking. That is more than alcohol, crack, heroine, crime, suicide, car accidents and AIDS put together.

Smoking is a huge problem in the modern world. To both the smokers and also the people who might be just walking past, or living under the same roof.
